1:30 pm A New Level of Accountability?
Straight Talk from the RCMP

The Canadian Press is pleased to host a discussion with the RCMP's Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens who was appointed to the force's top job in British Columbia in December.

The RCMP is one of the most recognizable brands in the world, but it has taken a battering in recent years and many of the most controversial events have happened in B.C. When new Commissioner Bob Paulson was appointed last November, he confronted some of those controversies headon saying the force was "weak in our leadership area" and stating that his top priorities are accountability and leadership.

A month later, Callens became the top Mountie in charge of E Division, where the force has more officers than in any other province. Among his first public pronouncements was an apology to the families of the victims of Robert Pickton, acknowledging for the first time that his force could have done more to stop the serial killer.

Callens joined the RCMP in 1985 and has worked in major crime, federal drug enforcement and criminal operations in all areas of B.C.

He will be joined by Supt. Ray Bernoties, E Division's officer in charge of communications.
